Understanding the Rugby Seasons (U14-U12 Edition)

The rugby year is divided into two seasons: Spring and Fall. While both seasons offer great opportunities to play and develop they have different formats.

Spring season-15s Rugby

The Spring season is our primary and most popular season. Teams play traditional 15-a-side rugby, with 15 players from each team on the field (U12’s play with slightly less players, 12v12).

Our U14 team competes in a sanctioned league, which includes regular-season matches, playoffs, and the opportunity to compete for a Pennsylvania State Championship. 

The U12 team follows the U14 schedule.

When the U14 team plays an opponent, our U12 team plays that club’s U12 team as well. Currently U12 does not have league playoffs or a Pennsylvania State Championship.

A simple way to think about the two age group is:

• U14 = Varsity
• U12 = JV

This allows the U12 program to provide players with the opportunity to develop their skills and gain valuable game experience while preparing for the U14 level.

The 2027 Spring Season will be posted here by December. Our first practice is usually in the beginning of January and last year we held practices at South’s gym on Sunday mornings. We move outside early March and practices are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Maennerchor Field on Cold Spring Creamery Rd.

Fall Season-7s Rugby

The Fall season is shorter and features a faster-paced version of rugby called 7s. Instead of 15 players on each side, there are 7 players per team on the field.

The U14 team competes in sanctioned tournaments with the opportunity to play for a Pennsylvania State Championship.

The U12 team again follows the U14 tournament schedule, but does not play for a Pennsylvania State Championship.
