Men Remain Unbeaten with Rout of Wilmington
The opening kick off during Saturday’s Division 2 MAC North clash between Doylestown RFC and Wilmington RFC was taken by Doylestown’s Dylan Hamilton and it was a beautiful, high and hanging strike. Somehow it found its way, after a fortuitous bounce, into the charging arms of Scott Neff who took it to the five metre line with defenders draped all over him. His support was ready to rock and after a simple crash ball the backline spun it wide and found Max Compo, who scored the first points of the game less than forty seconds after the opening whistle.
The Dragons energy was aggressive as many players had bad memories of Wilmington in years past. They were intent on not letting the opening minute be a fluke and they set to putting the pedal down and the pressure on.
By halftime, Doylestown were sitting comfortably at 55-0. Trys were scored by Oliver Samuels, Matt Frederick, Kevin Reilly Jr., Dylan Hamilton, Kevin Hockings, Eric French, Bill McCoach, and a second from Max Compo. Hamilton notched 5/9 tough conversions.
The Dragons had played a clinical half of rugby and the scoreline and the morale of the Wilmington players were all the evidence needed. The high October temperature and significant travel time did nothing to effect their play.
The Dragons made all of their substitutions throughout the second half and, while Wilmington managed to touch down two well worked trys, they did not slow due to their changes. They were dynamic and lethal in the second half as they rounded out the scoreline with 7 more second half trys, 3 of which were scored by Kevin Hockings. The rest of the scoring on the day was rounded out by trys from Chris Bone, Dylan Hamilton, Eric French, and Mike Acker.
Dylan Hamilton went 4/4 kicking in the second half to round out his line on the day to an attractive 9/13 including a run of 9/10. Kevin Hockings went 1/4 on the day.
Doylestown has officially put the league and all of Division 2 on notice. Final score 100-10. Statement made.
The Dragons are off on a two week bye period and sit comfortably atop the league table at 5-0 with a point differential of +297 after 5 games. Keep your schedules clear for their home clash with South Jersey, who currently sit second in league, on 10/28/2017.
