Doylestown Rugby Football Club News – April 29, 2024

Men’s Team

The Doylestown Rugby Football Club Men’s Team traveled to Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, April 27, 2024, with the hope of ending the spring season undefeated. The match started with a quick try by Wilkes-Barre’s hard-hitting backline to start the match 0-7 to Wilkes. The first half was at a breakneck pace and points were traded back and forth. Open field play led to two trys by Brian Stella and one try by Kevin Reilly. Shannon Pearson
punched in Doylestown’s final try of the half, to make it a 22-22 score at halftime. During halftime, the team focused on communication defensively and on maintaining the offensive structure that was working the entire first half. In the second half, the Dragons came together as a collective unit. Two trys each were scored by Eric French and Kevin Hockings. Rookie Shawn Williams had a breakthrough down the sideline, leading to a try by scrumhalf Dean Hawkins. In the final minutes of the match, Connor Dolan was able to create even more distance with a try of his own. The final score was Doylestown: 58 Wilkes Barre: 29. Try scorers for the Dragons were: Brian Stella (2), Eric French (2), Kevin Hockings (2), Kevin Reilly (1), Shannon Pearson (1), Dean Hawkins (1), and Connor Dolan (1). Brian Stella kicked four conversions. The Man of the Match was Brian Stella. The Hard Hat Award went to Roy Pearson.

High School Boys’ Team

On Sunday, April 28, 2024, the Doylestown Rugby Academy High School Boys’ Team hosted Cumberland Valley in a league match. The A Side Dragons fell to Cumberland Valley, 26-30. Try scorers for Doylestown were: Marco Burns (2), Gavin Koch (1), and Cade Aivazian (1). Joey Craig kicked three conversions. The Man of the Match was Tim Fuhrmeister (1). In a “12 on 12” B Side game, Cumberland Valley won, with the final score of 12-27. Try scorers for the Dragons were Eric Kallelis (1) and Ben Kix (1). Nolan Corey kicked one conversion. Doylestown will travel to play Gregory the Great in a league match on Sunday, May 5, 2024.

High School Girls’ Team

The Doylestown Rugby Academy High School Girls’ Team fell to Downingtown Girl’s Rugby, 24-36 at home on Sunday, April 28, 2024. Sydney Haddon led the team with two trys. Addy LaCarrubba and Siena Accardi each scored added one try. Jocelyn Terry kicked two conversions. LaCarrubba was awarded the Hit Chain for her excellent tackling that prevented Downingtown from scoring on multiple phases. Accardi was awarded Player of the Match for her ball movement, hustle, and overall hard playing. Doylestown will travel to Aberdeen, MD on Sunday May 5, 2024 to take on North Bay and West Carroll in EGRL matches.

Middle School Girls’ Team

In a home match on Sunday, April 28, 2024, the Doylestown Rugby Academy Middle School Girls’ Team defeated Downingtown 27-22. MJ Cashman had two trys for the day. Vivian Foley, Shiane Young, and Fiona Bonenberger each had one try. Ashley Kelly made one conversion. MJ Cashman was named Player of the Match. On Sunday, May 5, 2024, the Middle School Girls’ Team will travel to Aberdeen, MD to play the middle school teams of North Bay and West Carroll.

Junior Boys’ Team

The Doylestown Rugby Academy Junior Team (8th and 9th grade) played their fourth league match on Sunday, April 28, 2024 at home against Downingtown. The Dragons came away with a shutout victory. They executed very well and were able to put together two strong halves. Doylestown upped their overall record to 6-0 on the season. Try scorers for Doylestown were: Gavin Graham (3), Davis Parisi (3), Nick Miletto (2), Jamie Weir (1), Jackson Reilly (1), Jack Sugalski (1), Liam Hoey (1), Chris Imperato (1), and Hunter Pulford (1). Weir kicked 9 conversions and Graham had one conversion. The Dragons’ final league match will be at Berks County Rugby on Sunday, May 5, 2024.

Youth Boys’ Team

The Doylestown Youth Rugby Team defended their home pitch successfully by defeating the Young Dingoes of Downingtown Youth Rugby Club on Sunday, April 28, 2024. The Young Dragons dominated the first half by scoring four trys and entered halftime with a score of 22-0. In the second half, Doylestown continued to outpace the Downingtown by scoring five more trys. Just before the game ended, Downingtown scored two
trys, but the game was well in favor of Doylestown by that point. The game concluded with a Doylestown victory, 55-10. The Young Dragons improved their overall record to 4-0 in the Rugby Pennsylvania League. Try scorers for Doylestown were: Jonah Khanan (2), Quinn Fragner (2), Conor Cassidy (1), Maika Heimbach (1), Reed Charlesworth (1), Harry Imperato (1), and Carter Braun (1). Cassity kicked four conversions and Charlesworth kicked one conversion. Downingtown had 2 trys and no conversions. On Sunday, May 5, 2024, the Young Dragons will travel to Reading to take on the Berks County Youth Rugby Club for their final game of the regular season.
