Doylestown Rugby Football Club News – August 25, 2025
Men’s Team
The Doylestown Rugby men’s team traveled to Morris, New Jersey, on Saturday, Aug. 23, to knock the rust off in a preseason friendly match against Morris Men’s Rugby.
Because it was the first competition for each team, the game was played as three 20-minute periods. Both sides used all available players, with the goal of getting each club ready for their upcoming league season.
The first period was scoreless, riddled with handling errors and other miscues, as one would expect for the first time each team has been on the pitch since the spring.
The second period saw each team settle down and play with continuity. Doylestown opened the scoring with Joe Stella combining a breakaway with some nifty kicking for a try, which was converted by Breck Zwanch. Morris was able to answer the scoring with a breakaway through a tiring Doylestown defense. The final score of the period saw Doylestown’s Brian Kelnhofer intercept a Morris pass and dot the ball under the posts, with the conversion kick being unsuccessful. Heading to the final period, Doylestown held a 12-7 lead.
The final period of the preseason competition saw each team clicking, with the early portion being played at midfield and neither team being able to get through. Doylestown’s backline used some great handling work to attack deep in to Morris territory. They capitalized on the territory, with captain Matt Frederick’s strong running for a try. Zwanch converted the try and Doylestown led 19-7.
The day ended with one more score by a Morris side that would not quit. Kelnhofer put the finishing touches on his Man of the Match performance, with his second try of the day. The final score was Doylestown 24, Morris 12.
The Man of the Match was Brian Kelnhofer, with the Hard Hat being awarded to Breck Zwanch for his outstanding play filling in at flyhalf.
Doylestown will host Wilkes-Barre Breakers on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 1 p.m. at the Maennerchor Field in its second preseason match of the fall season.
