Doylestown Rugby Football Club News – September 9, 2024
Men’s Team
The Doylestown Rugby Club Men’s Team started their 2024-2025 campaign by hosting an always tough Wilkes-Barre Breakers squad in a pre-season match at the Maennerchor Field in Doylestown, Pennsylvania on September 7, 2024.
The game opened with some back-and-forth play, as each team competed for territory. Doylestown was able to lock in and move the ball through multiple phases to spring Julio Marsiglia for a try. Fionn O’Toole slotted the conversion kick for the Dragons to go up 7-0. A converted Wilkes-Barre try saw the score tied 7-7, but later in the period, Brian Stella crossed the goal-line with some nifty running to put the Dragons up 12-7. Wilkes-Barre was able to grind out a try, and the half ended with the score knotted up at 12-12.
The Dragons came out focused in the 2nd half, and the rain started pouring, making playing conditions a bit of a mess. Doylestown remained focused and caught a break up the sideline, and using some creative play by Julian Bellman, found themselves up 17-12. Wilkes-Barre always had an answer to even up the score 17-17. The Dragons were able to finally capture some momentum and close out the 2nd half with trys by Brian Stella (2), Brian Kelnhofer, and Chris Muniz. The scoring was accompanied by two conversions from Fionn O’Toole. Wilkes-Barre never stopped playing hard, and the final tally showed Doylestown 41, Wilkes-Barre 31.
The Man of the Match was awarded to Julio Marsiglia. The Hard Hat was given to Jed Fizzano. The Dragons begin their league schedule on September 21, 2024 with an away match against Monmouth.
