Doylestown Rugby Football Club News – September 23, 2024

Men’s Team

The Doylestown Rugby Club Men’s Team traveled to Thompson Park in Monmouth, NJ to open their league season on Saturday September 21, 2024. The game was fast-paced, with each team taking advantage of multiple opportunities to capitalize on miscues by the other. The Dragons found themselves down at halftime, 29 – 12, but the scoring was only getting started. Doylestown was able to claw their way back, holding the lead for a bit in the 2nd half. A strong finish by Monmouth saw the final score end 67 – 38.

Brian Stella contributed 2 trys on the day, with other trys coming from Matthew Frederick, Shawn Williams, Kevin Reilly, and Shane Hill. Fionn O’Toole kicked 4 conversions. The Man of the Match was awarded to Chris Muniz, and the Hard Hat was given to Royden Pearson. Come see the Dragons on Saturday September 28, 2024 as they host South Jersey at Maennerchor Field in Doylestown, PA at 1pm.

Women’s Team

DRFC Women’s team traveled to Northeast Philadelphia to compete against the Northeast Philadelphia Irish. They showed up with 15 players, dropping down to 13 at some parts of the match, and still held their own and fought like the dogs they are. They all endured 80 minutes of injuries and they did it TOGETHER. The odds were stacked against them but dragons never quit! The final score was NE Irish 36 Doylestown 19. Trys were scored by Baby J, Gianna, and Maddie with Dowdy hitting two conversions.

Morgan killed it at fly-half (and a bunch of other positions) to win offensive player of the match. Shay absolutely slayed at prop and had top notch defense to earn her defensive player of the match. Maddie gained meters at inside center with some hard evasive runs to earn her overall player of the match. Next week the women have a bye so their next match is October 5th when they travel to battle against Harrisburg.

HS Boys 7’s

DRFC High School Boys fall 7’s team traveled with 12 players to compete in the Next Phase Rugby 7s Shootout hosted by Berks County Rugby. After a solid day of rugby, the boys ended 3-2 with a losses from LaSalle and Berks. They did defeat Delco, Elizabethtown and Conestoga. Next week they travel to Cumberland Valley for the Cumberland Valley 7’s tournament.

 

HS Girls 7’s

Doylestown Girls Rugby team I and team II competed in the Next Phase Rugby 7s Shootout hosted by Berks County Rugby. Doylestown Girls I went 4-0 whereas Doylestown Girls II went 2-1. With a combined point count, they outscored their opponents 155-44. Next week they travel to compete in an EGRL 7’s tournament.
